Here are some ways you can unlock your car doors:

• With a key.
• By pressing the unlock button next to the driver’s and passenger’s seats.
• By using the combination lock outside the vehicle.
• With a keyless entry remote control.
• By pulling up the knob inside the car door.
• By a signal from a control center.

Your vehicle is locked and unlocked by the body controller, or a computer in your car that takes care of several convenience features of your vehicle, such as making sure the interior lights of your car stay on until you start the car, or reminding you to turn off your headlights or take your key out of the ignition if you forget. When you press the lock or unlock button on your vehicle’s key fob, the body controller monitors radio frequency and when it gets the correct digital code from your fob, it provides power for the car doors to lock or unlock.

Part of the body controller is the actuator, which activates when the radio transmission is received from the key fob. When activated, the actuator moves a rod attached to the rear of the door lock mechanism. The rod applies pressure to the lock open switch on the back of the door lock mechanism which opens a pair of jaws on the door lock mechanism. This allows the car door to open when you lift the door handle.
